This is an open letter from Nader to Limbaugh:

WASHINGTON, Jan. 30 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The following is an open letter to Rush Limbaugh from Ralph Nader:

Rush Limbaugh
The Rush Limbaugh Show
2 Penn Plaza
New York, NY 10121

Dear Mr. Limbaugh,

The Associated Press reports your new contract with Premiere Radio Networks will enrich you with at least $38 million a year over the next eight years. You are making this money on the public property of the American people for which you pay no rent.

You, Rush Limbaugh, are on welfare.

As you know, the public airwaves belong to the American people. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is supposed to be our trustee in managing this property. The people are the landlords and the radio and TV stations and affiliated companies are the tenants.

The problem is that since the Radio Act of 1927 these corporate tenants have been massively more powerful in Washington, DC than the tens of millions of listeners and viewers. The result has been no payment of rent by the stations for the value of their license to broadcast. You and your company are using the public’s valuable property for free. This freeloading on the backs of the American people is called corporate welfare.

It is way past due for the super-rich capitalist — Rush Limbaugh from Cape Girardeau, Missouri — to get himself off big time welfare. It is way past due for Rush Limbaugh as the Kingboy of corporatist radio to set a capitalist example for his peers and pay rent to the American people for the very lucrative use of their property.

You need not wait for the broadcast industry-indentured FCC and Congress to do the right thing. You can lead by paying a voluntary rent — determined by a reputable appraisal organization — for the time you use on the hundreds of stations that carry your words each weekday.

Payment of rent for the use of public airwaves owned by the American people is the conservative position. Real conservatives oppose corporate welfare. Real corporatists feed voraciously from hundreds of billions of dollars in corporate welfare gushing out of Washington, DC yearly.

Whose side are you on? Freeloading? Or paying rent for the public property you have been using free for many years?

I look forward to your response.

Sincerely yours,

Ralph Nader

I do agree that Rush should be paying a large tax rate to use the public airwaves. The only service he provides is to himself. The Rush Limbaugh show is just proof of how many backwater rednecks are left in America. We just have to keep working together to eliminate this type of huckster and hatemonger by putting more of our resources into education.

The term ‘redneck’ originates with union workers in Appalachia who tied red scarves around their necks, in silent support of socialist movements.

You’re using the term as a racial slur, of course, which is how the media and oligarchs of the 19th century intended it; and I thought it was appropriate to give a little context.

I don’t mind the fact that racists might stop in here (I like the first amendment as well as the next guy) but I find it somewhat funny to note that you’re twisting the term to mirror the slur which was invented by the ruling class to disparage workers of all nationalities and skin-tones.

Of course Rush Limbaugh exploits working-class White people, and encourages racism, in the same way that some of the visitors to this blog do.

Racism is insidious, in that it pits working people against one another. Working class Whites (who hold the vast majority of economic and military power in North America) see themselves in some sort of phony alliance with the ruling class; while simultaneously seeing themselves as somehow better than their Brown and Black brothers and sisters. The ruling class gives White workers only a few extra crumbs from their table, and laughs at their collective stupidity.

The real solution is for all working people to start pursuing class interests, and put these petty ideas about race, religion, language and nationality into the garbage — or at least on the back burner — but with people like Limbaugh filling their heads with illusions it’s somewhat difficult to reach that destination.

Of course Limbaugh’s on welfare, as are his super-rich masters who pull his strings. The average multimillionaire pays little in the way of taxes and gets plenty in return for the pittance he might have to shell out.

Great article. I love Ralph Nader.

Wow. Thanks for the interesting insight into the term “redneck.” Good stuff.

If you are an American an grew up in the South you know exactly what a redneck is today. Its an ignorant racist white person.

I wish I had more than just general knowledge about it. Something for a future article maybe.

If you are an American an grew up in the South you know exactly what a redneck is today. Its an ignorant racist white person.

It’s a racial slur directed at working class people; and it became a racial slur when it was redefined by the bourgeoisie in the nineteenth century, to defame working White people who were starting to unite with Blacks and give big business (coal mine owners) Hell.

Since you’ve personalized things I don’t mind explaining that I spent a large chunk of my childhood around the gulf coast. In the ninth grade I was shuttled around to various orphanages and treatment centers, as a ward of The State of Texas, where I was taken care of by working-class people (Blacks and Whites both).

Needless to say, I do know exactly what a ‘redneck’ is, and I know how you’re using it, and I know the end result of people using the term in a political context. Like all racial slurs, it alienates one group of workers from another, and sets workers fighting among themselves along meaningless racial lines, for the benefit of the ruling class. Rush Limbaugh exists because working-class Whites feel alienated by people using exactly that term. You are part of the problem you’re complaining about, whether you know it or not.

In my early twenties I was involved with various socialist youth groups in different capacities. There were always a few people who started in with bashing White people at these things. (They were almost always White people themselves.) It wasn’t until I read Eldridge Cleaver (who was a Mormon, by the way) that I realized that this is a tactic of the system which had been used for decades to disrupt and discredit leftish movements.

Cleaver wrote about how the Black Panthers started out as a group who were feeding kids breakfast, and the insertion of this type of rhetoric ruined their very positive movement. It turned out that the people who promoted the ‘kill whitey’ nonsense were eventually found to be in the pay of the government, and were doing it as part of a COINTELPRO scam.

There’s nothing I can do to keep you and others from pursuing these sorts of identity ideas here, but I’ll object to racialist terms when I see them in print. The first amendment cuts both ways.
