Obama runs away from the question that the world would like to hear him answer.

Can anyone possibly think that our foreign policy with regards to the middle-east will be any different under Obama than it has been under any other US president?  Look at this excellent question posed by Helen Thomas last night in Obama’s big press conference:

…And, also, do you know of any country in the Middle East that has nuclear weapons?

And how did the President answer her?

With respect to nuclear weapons, you know, I don’t want to speculate. What I know is this: that if we see a nuclear arms race in a region as volatile as the Middle East, everybody will be in danger.

Why can’t he just say what everyone who has inquired into the issue knows?  Why can’t he tell the American people that Israel is the only middle-eastern nation with nuclear weapons?  He has no qualms about calling Hamas and Hezbollah terrorist organizations.  In his same speech he said that Iran is seeking after nuclear weapons without providing proof of such an assertion.  Why can’t he say what everyone knows about Israel’s nukes?  Does anyone doubt that they exist?  Here, then are a few educational links for you:

Then there’s this excellent Wiki page on the topic:

You would think that the American President would have the courage to say it like it is.  At least maybe we could explain why the US and Israel are the only two nations that voted against a nuclear weapons free middle east initiative back in 2007.

If we cannot even tell the world what they already know about the existence of Israel’s nuclear weapons program, how can we even begin to think to chastise Iran for their alleged nuclear weapons program?

In December of 2003, at the beginning of the Iraq war, the neo-cons were also squawking about invading Syria on the pretext that they might be doing research into nuclear weapons with North Korea.

Almost immediately, Bashir Al-Assad (Syria’s young president) appeared in the United Nations, and went around to various European capitals, to lobby for making the whole of the Mediterranean (specifically including Israel) a “Nuclear Free Zone”.

It was amazing to me how rapidly the government and the press (which had been running nearly hourly reports on the need to invade Syria and subjugate her people) dropped the subject *immediately*.

Some remnants of the side of the story most North Americans never got is here:

Our degree of hypocrisy on the topic of nuclear weapons is astonishing and though it is not publicized in the USA, the rest of the world must regularly have to pick their jaws up off of the ground.

Other signs of our hypocrisy include the regular vote on FISSBAN that comes up for a vote in the UN General Assembly every year. It would ban the production of nuclear weapons grade fissile material in all nations. The measure was wildly popular and the vote in 2004 was 147-1. The USA was the only nation to oppose it. In subsequent years the USA was joined by Palau, the small US protectorate state in the Pacific that votes with us on these sorts of matters, with the vote being 179-2.

Of course, our non-compliance with the spirit of the NPT goes without mention as does our recent rumblings about the creation of a new generation of nuclear weapons.

  3. Noam Chomsky provides a possible reason why no American politician will admit that Israel has nukes, even though Mordechai Vanunu was kidnapped by Israeli intelligence and spent 18 years in prison (11 in solitary confinement) for revealing Israel’s nuclear program: “Acknowledgment of the existence of Israeli nuclear weapons would raise the question why all U.S. aid to Israel is not illegal under 1970s congressional legislation that bars aid to any country engaged in clandestine nuclear weapons development.” -Noam Chomsky

Ah, I see. Great point. Except we already violate that principle with India and we violate it openly.

Another possible reason would be that the Arab league declared last year that if Israel ever acknowledged openly its nuclear weapons program, all Arab League nations would pull out of the NPT. In any case, we continue to support the criminal Zionist regime under Obama just as we have under all US Presidents. He’s no different.

Obama had to kiss the butts of the Israeli Lobby or he would have been done for before the primaries were over. He will have to continue doing so for quite some time, possibly through the full first term. However, any examination of Obama’s political history shows that he has not been a strong supporter of Israel until very recently…

Also I just wanted to say that I’m an east coast Liberal who just stumbled upon this site… and I am pleasantly surprised by the viewpoints expressed here. Keep up the good work!

During the Clinton presidency a local community radio (KBOO) show host always apologized for Clinton by reminding us that he had to go along on these things or be assassinated. I always thought, “Why cann’t we have someone with cojones, like Amy Goodman, for president?” She and Allan Nairn showed what they were made of when they barely survived Indonesian massacre while reporting on the genocide in East Timor.

I saw their film and read their story over there. They truly did have some cojones. Our politicians don’t have cojones. They remind me of Hugh Nibley’s excellent article on leaders entitled, “Leaders to Managers: The Fatal Shift.” Great article. You can find it online. Our leaders are managers and not the kind of leaders this world has seen in Joseph Smith and Brigham Young. We need more true leaders.

  9. Forest Simmons says:

When people ask me how so many Mormons could vote for George Bush, especially for his second term, I have to fall back on this scripture from Second Nephi.

    2 Ne. 28: 14
“… they have all gone astray save it be a few, who are the humble followers of Christ; nevertheless, they are led, that in many instances they do err because they are taught by the precepts of men.”

Also apropos is Matt. 24: 24
“For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.”

“Christ” is the Greek equivalent of “Messiah,” which means anointed one. George Bush presented himself as the one anointed by God to save America.

False christs are those charismatic public figures who (like Lucifer, the prototypical false christ) have their own seductive but misguided plan for saving us from enemies real and imagined.

False prophets are the media minions (like Rush Limbaugh) and servile intellectuals (like Christopher Hitchens) that prop up these false christs.

Colin Powell showed “great signs and wonders” to the U.N. assembly in support of George Bush’s plan of salvation. Condi conjured up the mushroom cloud smoking gun image in the same ill-begotten cause.

In other words, most false prophets and false christs will never describe thenmselves as “prophets” or as “The Christ.”

In general, we Mormons are easily taken in by politicians and other conservatively dressed con artists.
