Labor War in the Mojave

April 20, 2010 by The Mormon Worker

Here is an article by Mike Davis in The Nation about Rio Tinto locking out the union workers in Boron, California, a small desert town that supplies huge amounts of borax.

In it, Davis mentions the fact that one of the union members (Kevin Martz) is Mormon and says that working-class Mormons are “the most misunderstood social group in the American West.” Rio Tinto is a huge global mining corporation that has committed some pretty terrible crimes over the years.  It owns the huge Kennecott Copper Mine in the west end of the Salt Lake Valley. The new Real Salt Lake Soccer stadium is called Rio Tinto Stadium.
